Most female dogs have a heat cycle every 5 months. The 3 stages of the heat cycle (proestrus, estrus, diestrus) can last for up to 2 months. During this time, the uterus becomes very vascular and engorged. A dog can be spayed safely while she is in heat by tying off these extra vessels, but this requires additional time and material. Typically, these vessels will recede 2-3 months after the heat cycle has completed. Due to the prolonged estrous cycle of the dog, sometimes these vessels remain engorged even when there are no outward signs of heat. If you would like to wait until the heat cycle is finished to avoid an extra charge, the best chance is to wait a minimum of 2-3 months before spaying but please be advised this is variable from dog to dog. Please note: female dogs can come back in to heat within 4 months of their last cycle.
